Normally, it can take a full billing cycle — sometimes 30 days or more — for a paid-down balance or corrected error to show up on your credit report and update your score. A rapid rescore is a way to speed that up to as little as a few business days.
Why you can't request one yourself
Rapid rescores are only available through mortgage lenders, not directly to consumers. If you're in the middle of a mortgage application and pay down a card balance to lower your utilization, your loan officer can submit documentation to the bureaus to have the update reflected quickly, for a small fee.
Ask before you pay anything down
What it can and can't fix
- Can help: a paid-down credit card balance that lowers your utilization ratio.
- Can help: a verified correction of an error, like a late payment reported by mistake.
- Can't help: rebuilding a thin credit history or erasing accurate negative history faster.
